Long Island’s Natural Settings
From the miles of beaches that border our shorelines, to the numerous parks, preserves and arboretums nestled in-between, Long Island is home to an abundance of natural areas.  Enjoy some stress-free, quality time with the kids at one of these locations this season.


Bailey Arboretum: Bayville Rd. and Feeks Ln., Lattingtown; 516-571-8020; www.baileyarboretum.org. Hours: Tues. – Sun. 9 am- 4 pm (April–October). Admission: free (donations welcomed).

Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park: 440 Montauk Hwy., Great River; 631-581-1002; www.bayardcuttingarboretum.com. Hours: Tues.–Sun. (plus Monday holidays April – Oct.), 10 am- 5 pm during D.S.T., 10 am - 4 pm. Admission: $6 per vehicle*.

Bethpage State Park: 99 Quaker Meeting House Rd., Farmingdale; 516-249-0701. Hours: Open year-round. Admission: $6 per vehicle*.    

Caleb Smith State Park Preserve: 581 West Jericho Tpke., Smithtown; 631-265-1054.

Hours: Wed. – Sun., 8 am – 4 pm. Admission: $6 per vehicle*.

 Caumsett State Historic Park: 25 Lloyd Harbor Rd., Huntington; 631-423-1770.

Hours: Year-round, sunrise to sunset. Admission: $6 per vehicle*.

 Clark Botanic Gardens: 193 I.U. Willett’s Rd., Albertson; 516-484-8600; www.clarkbotanic.org; Hours: Daily 10 am - 4 pm. Admission: $2 voluntary donation requested.

Connetquot River State Park: Sunrise Hwy., Oakdale; 631-581-1005. Hours: Open year-round, Wed. to Sun. 8 am - 4:30 pm. Admission: $6 per vehicle*.

Garvies Point Museum and Preserve: 50 Barry Ave., Glen Cove; 516-571-8010; www.garviespointmuseum.com. Hours: Tues. – Sun. 10 am - 4 pm. Admission: $3 adults, $2 kids 5-12, under 5 free.

Heckscher State Park: End of Heckscher State Parkway, East Islip; 631-581-2100. Hours: Year-round, 7 am – sunset. Admission: $8 per vehicle*.

Long Island National Wildlife Refuge: Comprised of nine units, with three locations open to the public (Target Rock in Huntington, Wertheim in Shirley and Morton in Sag Harbor).  Call 631-286-0485 or visit http://www.fws.gov/northeast/longislandrefuges/recreation.html.

Muttontown Preserve: Muttontown Ln., East Norwich; 516-571-8500; Hours: Open 7 days, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm. Admission: Call for fees.

Nissequogue River State Park: 799 Saint Johnland Rd., Kings Park; 631-269-4927. Hours: Year-round, dawn to dusk. Admission: $6 per vehicle*.

 Old Westbury Gardens: 71 Old Westbury Rd., Old Westbury; 516-333-0048;

www.oldwestburygardens.org. Hours: 10 am - 5 pm daily (except Tuesday), between April 26 – Oct. 31.  Call for hours until April 25. Admission: $10 general admission, $5 ages 7-12, free for ages 6 and under.

Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park: 1395 Planting Fields Rd., Oyster Bay

516-922-9200; www.plantingfields.org. Hours: Daily 9 am - 5 pm. Admission: $6 parking fee daily May 1 – Oct. 31, and on weekends and holidays only rest of the year.

Sands Point Preserve: 127 Middleneck Rd., Sands Point; 516-571-7900; www.sandspointpreserve.org.
Hours: Daily 9 am - 4:30 pm. Admission: Call for fees.

Sunken Meadow State Park: Route 25A and Sunken Meadow Parkway, Northport;

631-269-4333. Hours: Year-round, sunrise to sunset. Admission: $8 per vehicle*.

Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at Jones Beach State Park: Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh; 516-679-7254. Hours: Memorial Day – Labor Day open Wed. – Sun., 8 am – 4 pm.  Rest of the year, weekends only 10 am – 4 pm. Admission: Call for fees.

    *New York State parks also accepts the Empire Passport in lieu of daily admission fees.
